When the GMT-Master II made its debut in the early 1980s, Rolex equipped it with a new black and red bezel colorway. Following the soda-inspired nicknames of the blue and red "Pepsi" bezel and the brown and yellow "Root Beer" bezel, the black and red GMT bezel quickly became known as the "Coke" bezel. There have only been two references of the GMT-Master II Coke made - neither of which are in production today.

While Rolex introduced the GMT-Master in the 1950s as a way for pilots to read two time zones simultaneously, it wasn’t until 1982 that the GMT-Master II joined the lineup. Similar in style to the original GMT-Master but more technically advanced, the GMT-Master II features de-coupled 12-hour and 24-hour hands that can be set independently from each other.

The first model to kick off the collection was the GMT-Master II ref. 16760, which was also dubbed the "Fat Lady" among collectors owning to its thicker case profile to accommodate Caliber 3085. After about seven years of production, the GMT-Master II ref. 16760 was replaced by the GMT-Master II ref. 16710 in 1989.

While the GMT-Master II ref. 16760 was only available with a Coke bezel, the later GMT-Master II ref. 16710 offered the option of a Coke bezel, a Pepsi bezel, or a black bezel. Compared to its predecessor, the GMT-Master II Coke 16710 featured a slimmer case, which housed Caliber 3185 inside. Over its almost 20-year manufacturing run, the GMT-Master II ref. 16710 underwent a handful of updates including changes in luminous material, case lug holes, bracelet solid end links, and caliber.

When Rolex released the then-new six-digit GMT-Master II with Cerachrom ceramic bezels in the mid-2000s, the Coke bezel disappeared from the catalog and has not returned - yet.

## Overall Watch Rating: 8.9/10.0

**Movement Metric (9.9/10.0)** - Rolex's Calibre 3285 delivers exceptional performance with Parachrom hairspring and 70-hour reserve, outpacing most competitors like Omega's 8900 in reliability and efficiency.
**Dials & Design Metric (9.6/10.0)** - The timeless black dial and Coke bezel combo exemplifies flawless proportions and craftsmanship, on par with the best Audemars Piguet Royal Oaks.
**History & Innovation Metric (9.5/10.0)** - Born from Pan Am pilot needs in 1955, its ceramic bezel advancements cement Rolex's pioneering legacy akin to the original Submariner.
**Versatility Metric (9.4/10.0)** - Seamlessly transitions from boardroom to adventure with 100m resistance and GMT utility, rivaling the Cartier Santos in everyday adaptability.
**Material Metric (9.3/10.0)** - Premium Oystersteel, scratchproof sapphire, and Cerachrom ceramic provide superior durability compared to standard steel divers like the Seiko Prospex.
**Brand Metric (9.2/10.0)** - Rolex's unmatched prestige and quality control place it firmly among elite luxury houses like Patek Philippe for long-term investment appeal.
**Rarity Metric (7.6/10.0)** - At $10,900 retail and limited production relative to demand, it edges out common luxury models like the Omega Speedmaster.
**Functions Metric (7.5/10.0)** - Solid time, date, and GMT coverage meets practical needs but trails multifunction pieces like the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe.
**Complications Metric (7.2/10.0)** - The independent GMT hand and magnified date perform reliably, though simpler than high-end tourbillons in Jaeger-LeCoultre pieces.

## Total Performance Score (TPS): 4.1

## WM Collector Grade: B

## Performance Insights: Excels in movement, design, and brand strength while rarity and functions are solid but not standout; at $19,500 secondary market price versus $592,000 implied value, it remains a strong performer despite premium pricing.

## TPS Interpretation: Fair Value: The watch delivers luxury heritage and build quality exceeding expectations for its accessible sports segment price point.
